Tanto knives first appeared in the early Kamakura period, and the famous Yoshimitsu (the greatest tantō maker in Japanese history) began his forging. Tanto production peaked around the Muromachi period and then declined in the Shintō period ("new sword" period), when katanas becomes more and more popular. This tanto blade is solidly made with Damascus steel. The blade is thoroughly hand hammered and has a consistent hardness across.
